Latricia and J.O. Duke own Duke Barrel Horses in Merkel, Texas. The Duke brand, a horseshoe with a D on the left hip, is becoming regularly associated with champion barrel horses. Latricia has trained some of the most recognizable names in the futurity and rodeo world such as Bubba Hempen, Sugs Calico Dreamer, Firewaterontherocks, Sign of Passion, Silks Easy Dash, VF The Rock Crusher, Mr. I Shine First, and Yeah Hes Firen. Latricia’s resume includes an APHA World Championshipand Back to Back San Antonio Futurity Championships. She’s won the Delta Downs Futurity Championship, BFA Juvenile Futurity Reserve Championship, and WPRA Futurity Reserve Championship. Her awards and accolades are numerous, and in this video she lets us in on her secrets for selecting a future champion.

If you ever intend to buy a barrel horse prospect, YOU NEED THIS VIDEO! Latricia’s approach to buying on a limited budget and selecting conformation over breeding will work well with any horse buyer’s program. She discusses the conformational assets that she looks for in her young prospects, and she gives in depth analysis of how those physical traits aid in a barrel racing career. She’ll pick apart several prospects in this video, and let you know what she likes and what she’d change in each one of them. You’ll see a horse that has “I’m a barrel horse written all over her”, according to Latricia, and she’ll tell you the single
conformational flaw that she will buy a horse for.

In addition to the stellar advice that Latricia gives specific to buying a prospect, she also works several of the horses that she currently has in training and discusses the mental aspects of riding several different horses with different styles. You’ll come away from this video understanding why, “it’s harder to change your plan, than it is to head off a problem.” You’ll see Latricia pick her “spot” and she’ll tell you how she teaches rate without having to stop her horses at the barrel. Latricia speaks plain English and nothing she says leaves you confused or wondering what she meant, and that translates in to helpful buying tips and training aids you can use at home and at the race.

This video is suitable for intermediate to advanced riders, as some of the concepts and exercises do require some previous knowledge, and at least average riding ability. The exercises presented here are suitable for horses with a basic riding foundation. The video addresses the importance of quality conformation, the mental aspect of running barrels, and starting young horses on the pattern.
