This video could very well be the foundation for every Winningruns.com video, both past and present.  Winningruns videos clearly state:
“This video is suitable for intermediate to advanced riders, as some of the concepts and exercises do require some previous knowlege and at least average riding ability.”

In this months video, Kristen Weaver-brown will give you that “previous knowledge.”  This video and it’s explanations of Balance, Rhythym and Timing are the timing are the foundation upon which a strong rider is built.  Kristen is an AQHA Jr. World Champion, as well as a 4 time AQHA Reserve World Champion.  She’s an NFR qualifier & the first woman to win the “Big 4″ Rodeo Series.  Kristen’s background in horsemanship, reining and working cow horse competition make her a fluid rider and talented trainer.  More than that, her background has created an excellent teacher.

Winningruns viewers are constantly searching for that “feel” that many of our previous trainers have mentioned.  Kristen is the first trainer to come on Winningruns and provide a solid explanation of what that “feel” is.  With her explanation and exercises, Kristen helps you to learn how to “feel” the right motion by teach you how the balance, rhythym and timing affect the perfect rider to horse relationship.

The exercises demonstrated in this video focus primarily on the rider’s responsibility while riding.  Kristen teaches you what your legs and hands are for and explains why your horse reacts as he does.  The exercises will strengthen your cues and help you to find your center of gravity as a rider.  This section is an informative illustration, and watching Charlotte attempt to execute the drills drives home the importance of pushing yourself as a rider.

This video is suitable for beginning to advanced riders, as some of the concepts are suitable for beginners - while others should be used only under the watchful eye of experienced riders.  The exercises presented here are suitable for horses with a finished foundation.  This video discusses rhythym, balance and timing as it applies to equine activity.

The Winning Tips installment is short but informative, focusing on viewer questions about feeding programs, travel safety and rodeo preparation.

Video is aprox. 1hr. 23Mins

There is nothing more frustrating than riding a horse that is as solid as a proverbial rock, and having issues and misbehavior suddenly crop up from seemingly nowhere.  It seems incomprehensible that a horse that used to hunt the barrel and curl around it perfectly, is suddenly throwing his nose up and stalling out on the backside.  It’s virtually crippling when a horse that’s been there, and done that suddenly develops an attitude at saddling time and is cinchy as all get out.  The misbehavior is frustrating, but according to Darlene Kasper more than he is “acting out” . . . your horse is trying to communicate with you.

Darlene Kasper is a two time NFR qualifier and Oklahoma City BFA Reserve World Champion.  She’s won the Speed Horse Derby, and is a six time Texas Circuit Finalist.  Her horse Top Tally is an AQHA Horse of the Year, as well an AQHA Reserve Champion.  Darlene attributes her and Tally’s success to her barrel racing team, consisting of her veterinarian, her chiropractor and her farrier.  Together with that team Darlene has gotten to know her horse, and understand the communication that only he can provide when something isn’t right.  In this video, Darlene discusses how she gets to know her horses and how that familiarity with them has led to success in the arena.

In addition to discussing the close working relationship between her veterinarian, chiropractor and farrier, Darlene demonstrates several exercises that she uses to keep her horses healthy and well adjusted both physically and mentally.  The conversation about bit selection is interesting, and again harkens back to the one all important theme.  Know your horse’s weaknesses and strength, know his limitations and potential, know your horse’s signs of communication, and make adjustments accordingly.

Darlene also takes time in this video to discuss the transition from futurity competition and jackpots into rodeo competition.  The opportunity to learn from someone who has made a successful transition from one arena to the next is rare.  This video provides that opportunity and more.  As Darlene rides Scooby and Speedy, you are allowed into her training regimen for a young green horse and for an older finished horse.  It is interesting to watch how she changes and adjusts for each horse based on what she knows about them and their training level.  As she rides she goes back to her central theme . . . “Pay attention to your horse and what they are telling you.”

This video is suitable for intermediate to advanced riders with at least average riding ability, as the concepts do require some previous knowledge.  The exercises presented here are suitable for horses with a basic riding foundation as well as horses with advanced levels of training.  The video addresses veterinary, farrier and chiropractic care, equipment selection, starting a young horse on the pattern, issue resolution for specific barrel racing ailments, and communication between horse and rider.

Charlotte Cunningham returns to Winning Tips in this installment and takes the concept of communication a step farther in her discussion and demonstration.  This month’s Tip is to ride your horse to his or her actual and demonstrated ability, not based on some fictional timeline that may not apply to your horse.  Her frank discussion about training levels as they apply to horse at different ages is informative.  Additionally, she’ll help with the all important concept of getting your horse working off his hind end.

DVD is aprox. 1hr. 24mins

Ladies and Gentlemen, this video could easily go down as one of the best WinningRuns.com videos to date.  To the rider, barrel racing enthusiast and fellow barrel horse trainers, Charlotte Cunningham has put together a training video worth its literal weight in gold.  For herself . . . this video may be the end of her fruitful career as a trainer.  Charlotte is the 1994 BFA Futurity Champion (riding Orange Smash) and has gone on to a successful career as a barrel horse trainer.  She has made some of the easiest to ride, and hardest to beat horses in the barrel racing industry including her current mount Famous Betta Be Me.  In this video, Charlotte shows you exactly how she has made those champions, and how she addresses issues as they crop up along the competition rode.  Charlotte’s focus in this video is on the rider’s responsibility to clearly and consistently communicate with their horse, but she delves so deep into that communication that you’ll find yourself taking notes and hitting the rewind button repeatedly.

Charlotte’s discussion on equipment is phenomenal in this video.  She discusses bits in detail, and walks you through the progression that she follows with a horse through its training.  No stone is left unturned during this bit talk, from the effect the bits have on a horse’s flexibility and response to the position of a noseband on a hackamore, Charlotte holds nothing back.  Charlotte also takes time in this video to discuss her saddle selection and how it fits the form and function of the horses she rides, as well as addresses her physical needs.  She discusses the proper blanketing techniques for the Deb Sibley Saddles that she rides, and even goes into detail on her protective boot selection.  You will not wonder, after having watched this video, what Charlotte is riding in.

Charlotte’s discussion on equipment is informative, but where this video really shines is when she starts to ride.  At the request of WinningRuns.com viewers, Charlotte takes the time to discuss specific issues that are common to barrel racers all over.  Charlotte illustrates and instruct extensively on positioning your horse in the pattern in a consistent manner, and how that seemingly simple act will solve most problems.  She provides solutions to issues like running past the barrel, hitting barrels and horses that sling their butts.  There seems to be no end to the amount information that Charlotte is willing to provide in this video.  It is an added treat that you are able to see Charlotte working unfinished horses.  The benefit being that you get to see the correction of actual issues, not just explanations.

This video is suitable for intermediate to advanced riders with at least average riding ability, as the concepts do require some previous knowledge and are specific to the barrel pattern.  The exercises presented here are suitable for horses with a basic riding foundation as well as horses with advanced levels of training.  The video addresses equipment selection, positioning in the barrel patterns, issue resolution for specific barrel racing ailments, and rider responsibility.

As an added bonus, Dr. Mitch Hutchinson from Stephenville Veterinary Clinic in Stephenville, Texas, offers comprehensive advice about spotting soreness and rehabbing equine injuries, conformation and how it can affect an equine career, equine dental care and much more.

Video is aprox. 1hr 39mins
