Tana Poppino, from Big Cabin, Oklahoma, is a multiple futurity and derby finalist, a Dodge Circuit Finals Champion, winner of the Calgary Stampede $100K Round, and a two time NFR qualifier. She and her horses, Amigo and Goose, took some time out from the road to meet the WinningRuns.com crew at the beautiful Diamond W Arena in Alvarado, Tx. Tana’s appearance is a treat for any cowgirl wanting to hit the rodeo road, and it is a text book lesson on how to haul successfully. From her arrival time at the arena, into the warm up pen, past the timer-line and back to the trailer, Tana takes this opportunity to walk you through her routine step by step. The resulting video is chocked full of information, tips and practical advice that will surely help you to make that Winning Run!
Tana’s horses, Goose and Amigo, are two very different styles of barrel horses. Goose is a horse that works the pattern in a more classic style, and is laid back and often needs more encouragement to work. Amigo on the other hand, is “anything but classic”, according to Tana. He is a hair-triggered horse who’s warm up and routine is geared more toward keeping him calm and under control. What this means for you, the viewer, is an opportunity to see how a professional barrel racer adjusts her riding and routine to the horse that she is riding.
This video is suitable for beginner to advanced riders with at least average riding ability, and the exercises presented here are suitable for young to finished horses. Tana takes time to discuss the importance of a strong routine and knowing your horse, hauling tips and preparation, bit and protective boot selection, feeding and supplements.
Tana’s horses work great for her in this video, and that is perhaps the finest testimony to her program. She has figured out what works best for her horses, and she is humble enough to allow them to work in the way that best fits them. That understanding of her horses and their needs is what allows Tana to keep on making those Winning Runs!!
This month’s Winning Tips installment introduces us to Liana De Weese of DeWeesebarrelhorses.com. Liana is a professional trainer from Claremore, Oklahoma, and in this first segment of a two part series, Liana exhibits several basic techniques for starting a horse from the ground. Charlotte also takes time to answer some viewer questions about pattern size and how the pattern changes from arena to arena, and day to day.

What do you think you could learn from a NBHA National Champion? What value do you think there would be in watching a trainer ride if he has trained NFR, futurity, derby, and 4D champion horses? You will want to consider the answers to those two questions before watching this video, as that is exactly what this Winningruns.com installment provides. This month you are invited to meet Add and Lori Waddell of Henryetta, Oklahoma. Add is the gentleman who can boast about THREE NBHA National titles, and he is also the trainer of Risky Chris – 2000 NFR World Champion Barrel Horse!
In this video, Add expounds on the statement that you “Can’t make a horse overnight”, and helps you to understand how important a complete and solid foundation is on a barrel horse. He explains and illustrates how he uses foundation exercises and concepts to tune on all of his horses green to finished, and he also explains how the exercises helped to bring Chris back from an almost catastrophic injury.
Add’s training focuses on teaching a horse to use his body correctly, and in this video you are allowed to see Add riding Chris and reinforcing all of the basics. His session with Chris displays how working a finished horse at the walk can shave seconds off your run. If you’ve never seen an NFR champion barrel horse tuned on, this Winningruns.com video is your opportunity!
Add is not a trainer that will push a horse’s development for the sake of competition, and his advice focuses on patience and consistency. He makes a point of feeling a horse out in order to help him develop his own way of doing things, and to help him learn to use his entire body effectively. From the concept of perfect movement at the walk, to equipment and bit selection, and on to pocket size during your run and your tuning sessions, Add touches on several key items that will help you and your horse improve as a team and make that Winning Run!
This video is suitable for beginner to advanced riders with at least average riding ability, and the exercises presented here are suitable for young to finished horses. The Winning Tips installment marks the return Laura Schumann! This time around, Laura takes time to delved deeper into the her concept of “flexation”. You’ll have an “ah-ha” moment or two as Laura helps you to understand how flexation leads to mobility, mobility leads to position, and position leads to control . . . all of which lead to a Winning Run!

Online Video [10:15m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | DownloadThis WinningRuns.com installment is a bit of a departure from the usual format. Angie Grandpre, Canyon, Texas, is featured in this video. Angie comes to us to share her experience as a jockey, and takes it a step further by giving us a glimpse of the knowledge that she has gained working with Bunt Kitchens. Angie, riding Bunt’s horse Victory Dash, is a BFA World Champion, a BBR finalist, and has won more than $45 thousand dollars this year as well as several saddles.
Most remarkable about Angie’s accomplishments, is that she’s done it all as a relative newcomer to the futurity ranks. By way of introduction, Angie and Bunt first worked together more than 16 years ago, she as jockey and he as trainer. A losing battle with EPM ended their partnership, but Bunt never forgot Angie and kept his eye on her as she barrel raced through the years. Then, about 14 months ago, Bunt was looking for a jockey for Victory – and his mind went straight to Angie. The rest is history still in the making.
In this video, Angie does her level best to present Bunt’s training philosophy and advice in his absence. The combination of a speed and disposition is what makes a good horse in he Kitchens barn, and the horses that Angie brings along to ride are very representative of those traits. You can hear the strong influence that Bunt has had on Angie’s riding and training philosophy throughout this video, and you can see the results of that philosophy in the horses that she rides.
This video presents Angie as a student of Bunt Kitchens, and that will enable the viewer to better understand the concepts that she brings up. Because Angie is also “The Student” this time around, it makes her explanations very relatable and common sense. Angie also takes the time in this video to expound on some of her own preferences, and gives sound advice from the view point of a competitor and trainer.
She’ll explain the importance of not picking on your horse, not being afraid to go light on the bit, and she’ll explain how many of us are training our horses to run up the fence. In addition to training and riding, Angie provides tips specific to protective boots for your horse, your riding attire and how it affects you run, grooming tips, the use of rubber bands in a run, and the proper use of training aids when riding.
This video is suitable for beginner to advanced riders with at least average riding ability, and the exercises presented here are suitable for young to finished horses.
The Winning Tips installment this month is a departure from the norm, and boy is it a value added piece! Charlotte invites Laura Schumann to the WinningRuns.com family as one of the industries up and coming trainers, and allows Laura to give you what amounts to a riding lesson in her discussion of hand and bodypositioning, and picking your horse’s point of the turn. Laura is affable and easy to understand, and it is easy to see how her concepts come together to help you make that Winning Run!!

In addition to her various derby and futurity championships Tamara is a WPRA Divisional Tour Champion, a Reserve BFA World Champion and a multiple NFR Qualifier. In this video Tamara discusses the concepts of balance, rhythm, repetition & relaxation in detail, and she shows you how to apply these concepts for a Winning Run!!
This video, with Tamara’s detailed explanations and demonstrations, will serve as a complete riding lesson for the viewer. Her explanation as to why you must have balance, rhythm, repetition and relaxation in your training program in order to succeed is flawless. In her discussion of balance, she explains why it is imperative to use all four of your basic riding aids in a balanced fashion in order to communicate with your horse; the rhythm portion of her discussion explains how you can use your cadence and seat to control the speed of your horse’s gaits; her explanation of repetition outlines how you can use practice to sharpen your horse, but avoid dulling his edge by overworking him; and finally she explains how a combination of consistent balance, rhythm and repetition will help your horse to relax and perform with confidence.
Tamara also takes time in this video to discuss the all important topic of bit selection. Her discussion of bits is different from most others that you’ve seen in the past, and the information will be invaluable to your training and riding programs. While she does not focus on the mechanics of specific bits, she does delve deeply into the concept of fitting your horse properly for a bit.
This video is suitable for beginner to advanced riders with at least average riding ability, and the exercises presented here are suitable for young to finished horses. The video addresses the importance of good hands versus soft hands, the four basic riding aids and their use, bit selection and adjustment, how to bring a young horse along with balance, rhythm, an understanding of repetition, and enough confidence in your and his abilities to be able to relax.

This time around she delves in to the sometimes confusing territory surrounding hackamores and their use. Charlotte consistently reinforces the fact that a bit is not a band-aid for a lack of fundamentals in your horse’s training, but she highlights how different bits can “fit” different horses. There’s a bit of ground-breaking news in this segment as well. Charlotte has finally found the perfect bit for her sometimes temperamental champion, Famous Beda B Me.
