This month’s feature trainer is Kendal Owen of Owen Barrel Horses in Purcell, Oklahoma. Kendal has been training barrel horses exclusively for 18 years, and in that time her program has gone from tuning and rehabbing older problem horses to now training young futurity horses. Kendal has seen success in the futurity pen, on the open rodeo circuit, and in the competitive AQHA and NBHA arenas.

Michelle Noterman accompanies Kendal in this video installment, and is introduced as Kendal’s “Right Hand Woman”. Michelle is the person who puts the foundation and handle on all of Kendal’s horses that come in for training. Michelle’s background with Joyce Loomis, Jud Little and in the cutting pen have afforded her considerable riding talent. In addition to the solid training and business advice offered in this video, watching Michelle ride makes the video more than worth the purchase price.

Kendal talks some in this video about buying and selling quality prospects based on breeding and conformation, and she goes into some detail about the different markets in the barrel horse industry and how those markets affect our young horses. Kendal’s take on the importance of “staying invested, financially and mentally”, in your horse in order to see that horse be successful is refreshing. She impresses the importance of tailoring your training efforts to each individual horse and how vetting, proper farrier and chiropractic care figures into the overall success of a horse and rider team.

This video is suitable for intermediate to advanced riders, as some of the concepts and exercises do require some previous knowledge, and at least average riding ability. The exercises presented here are suitable for horses with a basic riding foundation. This video discusses buying and selling barrel horses, the approach to the first barrel, vertical and lateral flexion, shouldering in and out of barrels, body control and also breaks down Kendal’s 3 part stop.

This is a quick look at the video by Kendal Owen. Take a look then go buy the video. You can watch this video or download it and play it later on your computer or Ipod.
